A1 Licence

The A1 is the first step on the licensing ladder. It permits you to ride motorcycles and mopeds up to 125cc, and with a a maximum power output of 11kW. The A1 licence is accessible to people who are 17 or older. It is a great way to begin your motorbike journey.
To obtain an A1 licence you will have to complete the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT), and pass both a theory and two-part practical test. The CBT course is essential for motorcycle training and prepares you for both the theory and practical test. You will require a motorcycle instructor to accompany you on your A1 practical test. The test should last about 20 minutes and will consist of modules 1 and 2. Module 1 of your A2 motorcycle test is a car park-based session where you will learn how to control the bike by slow speed maneuvering and emergency stoppages. Then, you will take the road portion of the test, where you'll be required to demonstrate hazard avoidance exercises and road positioning. You will also be required to perform life-saving checks as well as maintain a distance of 2 seconds from the vehicle in front of you. You can commit minor mistakes that can lead to 10 violations. This includes not using your mirrors or failing to maintain a safe distance.
After passing both the modules of the A2 motorcycle test, you are able to take on any motorcycle that is in the A2 category. This includes the popular Honda CB500F or Yamaha MT-07 model. These bikes aren't very powerful however they are able to take on the most demanding speeds, and provide a comfortable and enjoyable ride.

A3 Licence
The A2 Licence is a natural advancement from the CBT and lets riders advance to larger bikes that have greater power output. The A2 Licence also comes with extra benefits that you won't get with the CBT. For example, you can ride on motorways or carry passengers. You can move from CBT to A2 by taking additional training and passing the relevant examinations. The A2 licence is valid for two years and may be upgraded to a full, unrestricted A licence after another two years.
The first step in getting your A2 license is to be able to pass the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) and Motorcycle Theory Test. After you have met the requirements, you're ready to take the Module 1 or Module 2 practical test. The module 1 test tests your ability to ride safely in a closed-circuit, while the module 2 test consists of manoeuvres on an open road.
You should be able to demonstrate good observation skills during the A2 practical exam and anticipate road dangers. You must also be able make the right road position, and perform controlled manoeuvres. For example, you must be able to perform a U-turn and execute an eight-point figure. You should be able to control your bike at a slow speed for instance, when turning at intersections or responding to traffic signals.
After having passed your A2 test you can begin working towards the full A license. This can be done by either taking the direct entry test or following the progressive access route. To be able to take direct entry, you must pass the theory test and complete the mod 1 and module 2 practical tests on a bike with at minimum 54bhp.
The A1 and A2 licences differ from the rest of UK motorbike licenses, as they are restricted based on weight-to-power ratios, not engine cc. This means that even some 600cc bikes may still be A2 compliant, especially when they have restrictor kits. However it is not the case that all bikes that claim to be A2 certified are actually compliant therefore it is recommended to do some research before you buy one.
A4 Licence
